I just got a kitten from a lady in the paper so I have no ideal who she is and I have only had the kitten for 6 hours and just notice a couple of small bugs that looked like roaches and was wondering is it possible that roaches travel in litter boxes?

Unfortunately Roaches will go where ever they want to go. I would advise that you get rid of everything that came with your kitty and get fresh. Get those roaches out of your house asap not the trash can but out of the house.

If you can not get the new stuff right now, Set up a new fresh box with paper strips for now and get a litter pan and fresh litter as soon as you can.
