How can we help make a new cat feel more comfortable in our home?

Yesterday, my husband got a persian cat (her name is Lilly) from a friend who couldn't keep Lilly anymore for various reasons (not related to behavior). Since we got Lilly, she has stayed hidden in corners and other places where she is by herself. We have put her old litter box (for the familiar scent of the litter and the familiar sight of it) as well as her regular food and water in the room where she hides. Every time we try to take her out of the room she runs and hides under couches. Yet when we do get a hold of her, she seems to enjoy being held and getting attention, but stays hidden the rest of the time. She an adult cat (2 years old) and we realize she's been completely uprooted from the life she was used to, so she's scared of her new environment, even though we've tried to make it as comfortable as possible for her. Is there anything else we can do to help Lilly feel more comfortable or will it just take time? We love Lilly and want her to be as happy and comfortable as possible. Thanks!

this is absolutely normal she has to get used to her new environment cats are creatures of habit, she will come around in no time give her her space, when she's ready she'll be running all around try putting out some toys let her rub herself on you if she tries to but don't pick her up she'll get familiar with her surroundings in no time.

I've had cats all my life and the one thing that brings them out from hiding is playing with them. The toy can be as simple as shredded newspaper wrapped up on a piece of yarn. Throw it under the couch, chair or whatever and drag it slowly towards you. You might also try swinging it just above the ground. If that doesn't work try buying one with a feather on the end of a plastic stick. It always worked for me.

She should come around you could try getting her a scratchpad/scratchpole.
