Hello, I was wondering how long I should wait to have my cat spayed after she has her kittens? My vet said I could have it done as soon as they are weened. but have heard that its best to wait until the kittens are 8-12 weeks. I am keeping them until 12 weeks and getting them shots. They have homes lined up already, all of which have had cats live in their home to very old ages.

Please no comments about how I should have her spayed now, I am really sick of the rude comments and pep talks. Accidents happen and I tried to keep her in until her spay. She is too smart and too much of an escape artist for her own good.

Any other thoughts, personal experience, or comments are much appreciated.

Wait until the kittens are weaned. No reason to to wait 8-12 weeks if they're not nursing. I have had cats for years and have had unexpected pregnancies. You're right it does happen. I had a Mama kitty spayed when the kittens were eating on their own and she still found her way to them. She got to them by squeezing through an impossible space. So when she gets home from the vet make sure she is confined in a safe place. Good luck to you.

i comprehend that you'll get a kitten spayed at the same time as this is 8 weeks old. As for a mom cat that is basically had kitten, you ought to attend till the kittens are 6 weeks old and are weaned from their mom's milk and are ingesting solid ingredients, then get the mama cat spayed.

I would do it at 8 weeks, before any more accidents happen.
