Normally, I love animals. But this cat hisses and attacks anyone other than my mother in law. We had to chase the cat out of her bedroom so the funeral home could collect her body. Now, we don't know what to do with the cat. Taking her to the humane society is pretty much out as she is viscious. Suggestions?

I know this will sound mean, but it works-

I used to have a cat named Summer that was an only kitty. She was not used to any else being around her, and she was scared to be parted from my sister's father in-law.

She didn't like to be picked up, petted- nothing. I took her home with me, put her in the house in an unused bedroom and made sure she had a blanket to sleep on, food and water, and her own litter box.

And this is the seemingly mean part- I would ignore her, go about my regular activities, and let her accept me on her own terms. I would make sure she was in her own room at night, and no other animals or people disturbed her. During the day, I would open the bed room door, and just ignore her- I let her explore the house when and how she wanted to. When she felt threatened, she would run back to the room and hide, and I wouldn't let anyone or any other animals in there- that was her room, her sanctuary.

After a couple of weeks, she would come up to me and rub my legs. I would see if she would let me pet her, and when she did, I would only pet her as long as she let me. When she ran off, I would let her do her own thing.

By the end of a month, she was sleeping in my room at the foot of my bed, on the floor, but at least she was accepting me better.

After two months, she was on my tummy, doing her milk treading thing and purring loudly. She was a very loving cat and I loved her very much.

It sounds like this cat was exceptionally devoted to your mother in law, and after enough adjustment to you, you might be surprised to find out the cat is not evil, but a very loving and devoted pet.

That is a good question. I may have the same problem. I am 83 and I have a cat that I have had since she was 5 weeks old -- she is almost 9 now. She won't let anyone touch her but me. I have discussed this problem with my daughter, and we have decided it would be best to have her cremated and possibly buried with me. It is too late to bury her with your mother-in-law, but perhaps cremation would be the only solution. She will never be adopted by anybody else. It is very hard to think of doing this, but it may be the best for the cat as well as everybody else.

I don't think this cat is evil because I love all cats. I used to have a cat that also hissed at me and I just understood that was one way of communicating her anger and fear. I believe this cat is very frightened rather than evil. I think that you should keep the cat and with time, you and the cat will bond and love each other. You just must have patience and give time to get to know each other.

I am so sorry for your lose. As far as the cat, maybe another family member can take it. If you can't find a home check with a humane society, they may be able to help you. Again Sorry.

That cat is obviously not going to adapt very well. Evn though it sounds mean, I think you have to bring it to a shelter. Try to find a no-kill shelter. Some animals just aren't nice, just as people are.
