Why does my cat not know his name well?

My Himalayan will be one year old next month and he still does not respond well to his name. He has a rather high strung personality and has had since I brought him home from the breeder. My older Persian (he's 18 months) knows his name very well and in fact responds like a dog would to his name and he is very laid back and has a very loving personality. Could my Himalayan not respond as well because of his over-all high strung personality or is there perhaps another reason? Thanks for your thoughts!

It's nothing to worry about, I have a 12 year old cat and he doesn't respond to his name sometimes. You can call "kitty, kitty, kitty" and that would probably work. Just practice his name with him more, he'll learn it, it just takes time. :)

Is his hearing okay? He might just not be catching his name all the time if that's the problem. Otherwise, I would say he's just a cat :) If he has a strong-willed personality to begin with he might just enjoy having the control over whether or not he graces you with his attention. I have two cats who both hear fine and are very cuddly, but I can be calling them forever before they finally acknowledge me sometimes. That's just the way they are. Also, if you got him from the breeder when he was a little older, they possibly could have called him something else for a while maybe? That's all the reasons I could think of, hope it helps!

Don't worry. My cats never listen to me. They can eventually respond to the name being called. My cat Boomer sometimes responds when I call her name. I recommend just keep repeating the name to the cat. I'm doing that with my other cats. It's going to take a while so be patient! Hope this helps!

All of our cats respond to their name, to one degree or another, most of them quite well. Some - actually quite a few of them - will come when we call them.

It is a matter of you using their name whenever you interact with them and anytime you encounter them in the house.

Your cat will only respond to its name if you use the name often enough for the cat to associate that sound with it and with you wanting something of the cat or having something for them.

You have to use the name over and over and over. That is the only way a cat will begin to respond to its name.

My cats Hydie (16 yr old Maine Coon) and TJ (4 yr old American Long Hair) come when they are called. TJ will come with his tail just a wagging like a dog. I have had Hydie look at me sometimes as if to say, "what do i look like a freakin' dog? I am not coming to you just because u call my name, when I want your attention, i will come to you, freakin' human..." she will look at you and walk away. It all depends on their attitudes and demeanor, when u have ur kitty in your hands, talk to him keep saying his name, like Max your such a beautiful boy, Max this Max that, maybe he isn't comprehending his name just yet. My TJ will be in a whole area of house if you want to give him some lovin's you just call him a few times, next thing you see him peek around the door, as if to say, "u called me?" Cats have their own uniqueness about them, their attitudes are the the cat's meow. but i would use your kitty name alot in talking to him...good luck.

Well cats and dogs don't really "know" their names they just respond to the way you say it. Like if you yell "bad dog!' in a harsh voice they're going to realize your mad, but if you say something in a high pitch, happy voice they think they've been good so they come to you. My cat and dog come when i call anytime i have a happy sounding voice whether im saying they're name or not.

Typically, Cat's do not respond to names as dogs do.

My cats ignore me all the time, it sounds like he's just stuck-up! Just like a kitty to do that too.

Call a dog and he will come, call a cat and she will take a message and get back to you....If i were to bet I'd say your cat knows its name well....

Maybe it's his personality, maybe he's deaf, maybe you gave him a name that's hard for him to catch on to. Like, you're supposed to give animals short names that can be easily pronounced. "Ria" is easier for them to recognize than "Mister Shnuffulumpugus"

you need to conditionally train him only satisfy his primary needs ies food drink affection when he make some response to his name. try it for a while, but dont hold out on food and drink for more than an hour after you have tried this method.
