Both of the first two answers are spot on, cats are obligate carnivores and NEED meat. Foods with grain give them too much carbohydrate, which is not good for them. Also, even good quality dry food is not too good for them, as cats have a low thirst drive and in nature get most of their water from the prey they consume. Canned food is typically about 78% water, while dry food is about 10%. A cat fed exclusively dry food will be somewhat dehydrated most of the time. In studies, cats fed dry food urinate half as much as those fed wet food, not good for their kidneys.

We feed our adult Ocicat mainly a grain free canned food, with a little snack of a high quality grain free dry food in the evening. We do not free feed!

Some of the others have mentioned some good brands of canned food, but if price is a problem there are actually a few types of Fancy Feast which are not too bad. The ones I have found are all the older "classic" formulas, none of the newer fancier ones with gravy and such are any good. Look at the labels and avoid any with things like corn meal, wheat gluten, and similar grain derived ingredients.

Not really and neither is 9 lives or meow mix. All are full of grains and fillers which should be avoided. Cats also should ideally be fed canned food (or raw). Good quality foods are wellness core, blue wilderness, taste of the wild, merrick before grain, natures variety, felidae, addiction, halo, lotus etc.

Look at the ingredients. Assuming you mean a cat or dog, they are carnivore so you want to see meat as one of the first two ingredients. And not meat by-products. If it has real meat, then its considered quality food for cats and dogs. Good luck!

If you want to give your cats good healthy food do not give them any food that has grain or corn in it You have to go to a good pet store to find healthy cat or dog food.I found out about healthy dog food when our border collie got a huge bump in her neck area,Being greatly concerned we bought whole chickens and cooked them for her, after about three weeks the lump disappeared. We never went back to giving our animals the grain type foods they are very bad for your animals.
