It depends on the shelter. There are definitely no kill shelters that are limited admission which means when they are full they're full. and that means yes they do turn away animals.and the people who are trying to give up an animal end up taking them to a shelter that does kill for space.

There have been some open admission shelters with a very low total kill rate though, getting a lot of animals adopted.

BTW There have been shelters that started calling themself "no kill" because that is popular but they didn't make real changes, they just play a game with the numbers and declare most the animals are not "adoptable" so that they can claim they are not killing adoptable animals. That does not hold water though -- it's hard to believe that only a small percent are not vicious or hopelessly ill. So it is important to know what is the total save rate.

I think one important thing to realize is that it 's not just about a "no kill shelter' -- it's about a "no kill community" - a community effort with many different kind of programs in place like low cost / free spay neuter, making that available in poor neighbourhoods, community support for TNR programs for feral cats ( who make up a huge percent of the animals killed in many shelters) , shelters having adoption hours at times more people who work and have school age kids can visit, counseling people on behaviour issues training etc. to help people retain their pets, shelters working with each other and with rescues to get animals out and if needed, transport to another part of the country where they have a better chance of finding a home, etc . etc.

cafe mocha is right on the money on this one. I too volunteer in a no kill shelter. The only time we send an animal off to be euthanized is when we send one to the vet's office to be humanely euthanized if it is ill or injured beyond hope. I know for a fact that this is what happens as I am the cat lady there and go with, and stay with, each and every cat that has to be euthanized. we do have limited space and are privately funded by donations so we do not have to take in more animals than we have room for. it is also a fact that some animals that we HAVE to turn away will end up in kill shelters. I know people complain to us about that but we are sorry that we cannot take all of them in. It is not our fault, or even the fault of kill shelters, that so many are killed. If everyone had their pets spayed or neutered then there would not be such an overpopulation of companion animals. oh and that winograd guy is indeed a nutcase. I was a member of his facebook group for about a month. I blocked them as they were complete idiots and their main objective it seems is selling winograds book, not actually helping animals or trying to stop the very real problem of pet overpopulation.

Well its more of a common sense thing. Non-kill shelters have very limited space and while people don't want to think their animals will die in a shelter, its the sad truth that many end up being PTS because of no room.

I blame the irresponsible owners who will not neuter/spay kittens or cats and just allow them to keep breeding with NO homes - then they whine about all the ones being put to sleep when they are a big part of the problem in the first place.

Those that say "I can't abort the kittens/puppies" are wrong - they need to go spend a week or two in a shelter and see the results of their irresponsibility!

Maybe change your topic to incorporate why you need to neuter/spay when they are kittens/puppies instead and still work it into the problem in the shelters/no kill shelters.

Even the largest no kill shelters can no keep animals for months into years, and the do put the down. They do not ship them to other shelters to be put down they do it right in their own shelter.

Because of the large numbers of puppy mills, Amish puppy farms and BYBers all shelters are over loaded to seams with unwanted dogs.

Because it's complete BS. The only place I've heard this is from Nathan Winograd who also says that pet overpopulation is a "myth" and that there's a "shortage" of cats and dogs in many areas. He's a completely delusional nutjob who's biggest supporter is even more of a nutjob - a greedy backyard breeder of non-breed standard Persians who regularly hands out her kittens unaltered because it's "wrong" to alter them. Here's one article about Winograd http://articles.sfgate.com/2007-10-02/living/17263755_1_animal-shelters-pet-overpopulation-pet-food-manufacturers-association

The FACT is that no-kill shelters are just that - no-kill. When they run out of space in their shelter and in their network of foster homes then they just don't take in any more animals. I know this because I've volunteered with both kill and no-kill shelters for over two decades.

Why are you writing a "research paper" about something that isn't true? Why don't you instead write about the pet overpopulation FACTS and about responsible spaying and neutering? Sounds more likely to me that you're a believe of this guy's idiotic thinking and this "research paper" is non-existent especially since you just spammed SIX different categories with this same "question".
