I want to put up a hummingbird feeder to "entertain" my two kitties. But one of them will definitely try to catch them if she can. I think it is kind of cruel for the birds, but a friend tells me that hummingbirds are too fast for a cat to catch. What do you think?

Oh yes, if you are my cat it must be exceedingly easy. She brings me2-3 per day!

She sits in the flower bed where there are plants that hummingbirds like and she reaches up and grabs the poor birds out of the air without even getting up!

I used to have hummingbird feeders, not since I got Lola. She used to just sit on the patio cover and snatch the birds out of the air when they came to feed.

She was a stray who had to feed on birds for survival, so maybe that made her faster than most.

Sure, if they're quick enough, if the hummingbirds don't see them until it's too late, or if they start with the cat. It sounds silly but I see some pretty confident hummingbirds...they would fly right at us when the feeder was empty so we would get the message.

My mother in law's cat caught a hummingbird last summer. And they didn't have a feeder and the cat doesn't have claws... I tried to save it and couldn't. :(

So the answer is yes, they can catch them. If you put the feeder someplace where the cats don't have access to it then you should be fine.

No, not easily...but it can be done. My friends cat caught one. Do you let them outside where the feeder will be? I have indoor cats and have a feeder hanging right outside the window where they can be entertained but without having access to the birds. If you can hang one in this situation it would be fine....but if they are outside with the feeder I would not suggest it.

Hummingbirds are exceedingly fast, and may be able to stay out of the cat's grasp, but is it really worth stressing the birds out? If they notice that there are cats around that pose potential danger, they many not continue coming to your feeder anyways.

I think your friend is right. My cat is fast, caught a teenage squirrel last summer, but he could never catch a humming bird. Those things are so tiny and fast, sometimes it hard to even see them.
