Question:
What's the difference between Royal Canin's "Renal LP" and "Modified"?

I'm not sure what the difference is and the manufacturer's website doesn't go into any kind of detail. Can anyone help me determine which food is best for my kittie? He was diagnosed 18 months ago with kidney problems. He's been on Science Diet's "K/D" and Purina's "NF" formula. Today, I bought the "Renal LP" thinking it was similar to the "modified" but I'm not sure now. Since I haven't opened the box or bag, I thought I'd ask first in case I need to exchange it. By the way, my kittie has been on both Enalapril (medication for heart murmur) and Methimezole (medication for thyroid).

As always, thanks very, very much for taking a minute to help me with your kind words of advice:)

I'm going to give you different advice then you were looking for. I don';t believe you should feed any of that crap unless your cat is in the final stages.

Treatment of Chronic Renal Failure

If your cat is not in final stages, this is not want you want to do. You do not want to put your cat on the

Vets low protein diet. There are simply so many better options out there than to hand the poor cat a low amount of poor quality protein - which often results in a poor appetite and muscle wasting since the body is now robbing its own muscle mass to feed itself a decent quality and amount of protein.

. There are new thoughts on this and the thinking is it is not the amount of protein but the quality of protein that matters.

The Merck veterinary manual [www.merckvetmanual.com] says that cats need "4 g of protein of high biologic value per kg body wt/day". That's about 7 calories from protein per pound body weight per day. If a cat isn't a good eater and consumes, say, 20 calories per pound per day, then 7/20 = 35% of calories can safely be from protein. It must be high quality protein, which means meat, fish, milk, and eggs, and not grain or soy.

I am under the assumption that you have been feeding mostly dry foods. Many use a vegetable based protein instead of animal and that is part of the problem.. Your cat needs protein as it is a carnivore and cutting down on it will lead to other health issues and may cause faster degeneration.

You want to cut down on fat and phosphorous (no fish allowed now) The best way to do this is with a raw diet which you can make yourself or buy. (Making yourself is better) link provided at the bottom

If you are unwilling to do that then something like the non fish flavors of Wellness or Merrick with NO grains are good alternatives. Wysong is also a good canned choice. This list gives a breakdown. Remember you want low phosphorous

http://webpages.charter.net/katkarma/canfood.htm

You also will want to look into phosphorous binders. Something like aluminum hydroxide

Ask your vet or look into calcitrol

You may want to talk to the vet about having injectable Pepcid AC on hand or you can buy it in pill form (ac not plain pepcid) and give 1/4 tab for stomach upset which happens a lot in crf cats due to acid in the stomach.

Henry, I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your original question either as I haven't seen the 'modified' version. As someone with a crf kitty though I have to agree with Ken's opinion of renal diets in general. I tried my cat on these diets (Royal Canin LP & Hill's K/D) when she was first diagnosed. The more of these foods I added into her meals the less she ate. As she'd already lost plenty of weight & muscle mass it wasn't something I could persevere with.

Renal diets are low in protein and phosphorous but there's a lot of debate amongst crf scholars now as to whether it's actually helpful to limit protein intake in cats - being the obligate carnivores they are. All agree that phosphorous restriction is crucial (high phos can make a crf kitty feel very unwell, nauseous and can actually make the disease progress faster) but some say that feeding high quality protein (ie. chicken) that the kidneys process more easily could be more beneficial than feeding low protein.

I researched the phos contents of commerical foods and found that Felix senior was lower in phos than many others. My cat has been on this since (with additions of chicken & other foods) - it certainly isn't ideal and I'm still on the lookout for better alternatives but in her case I didn't feel a renal diet was the way to go. In just a few months her weight has continued on an upward trend and she has regained muost of the hind leg muscle she lost too - something i doubt she'd have done with reduced protein.

The links Ken gave you are great. www.felinecrf.org & the yahoo support groups are particularly helpful for information on just about every aspect of crf care.

Sorry for rambling - I know this isn't what you were asking lol! Just another perspective... :- Hope your cat's feeling ok.

P.S. Forgot to add I use AH binders in her food too!

Exercise or no exercise you won't be able to lose the weight if you don't cut your food intake but we all know that's pretty hard, right? A good appetite suppressant can help you out big time but it has to be natural or you can get into serious heath problems.

I've lost 30 lbs in 2 months by using Miracle Garcinia Cambogia (FDA approved 100% natural). In my first month 20 and then 10 the second month. I was an emotional eater and these supplements changed my life. They act like an appetite suppressant so I didn't feel like eating anymore. Not hungry anymore -> Lower calories -> Lose weight, simple as that. I did no exercises just 30 minutes walks 5 days a week.

It's been 3 months since I lost the weight and I did not gain any pounds back, actually I lost another 2 lbs. If you want to take a look here is a website where you can find discounts: http://www.miraclegarciniapromo.com I got them 30% off from here. Hope this helps!

I can't tell you the difference but I was feeding Eukaneuba and Science Diet to my cat for a sensitive stomach then she was diagnosed with kidney failure. The vet wanted to put her on k/d but I didn't like that because I also had a healthy kitten and didn't think it would be good for the kitten to eat the k/d. If it's so safe, why is it prescription only? Anyway, I did quite a bit of research and with trial and error I ended up with Merrick wet food and Innova Evo dry for my cats. The cat with kidney failure stopped having a sensitive stomach for the most part and her blood values returned to normal. Now there is no indication of kidney failure. She was diagnosed two and a half years ago. I also have an adult cat that is 3 and a 10 month old kitten. The foods I feed are nutritionally complete enough to be fed during all life stages. They have no by products, no wheat, no corn. They are very healthy. You might try using these foods and see how your cat does. My cat with kidney failure went from vomiting once or twice a week to vomiting at most once a month.

Good luck to you.

If you want to eat truly healthy, lose body fat consistently, normalize your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, prevent cancer, and even boost your brain health and energy levels, you may have heard all over the news that the Paleo Diet has been found to be one of the best methods of achieving all of these benefits compared to any other popular "fad" diets out there. Go here https://tinyurl.im/aHLyL

The truth is that the Paleo Diet will never be considered a fad because it's just simply the way that humans evolved to eat over approximately 2 million years. And eating in a similar fashion to our ancestors has been proven time and time again to offer amazing health benefits, including prevention of most diseases of civilization such as cancer, heart disease, alzheimers, and other chronic conditions that are mostly caused by poor diet and lifestyle. One of the biggest misunderstandings about the Paleo Diet is that it's a meat-eating diet, or a super low-carb diet. This is not true

Keep this meal between 400 and six-hundred calories. Serve yourself a smaller sized portion, so if you like going back for seconds, you'll just turn out eating a normal-size portion.

Making dietary changes is your first line of defense in treating hypothyroidism. Learn here https://tr.im/Yv6Wr

Many people with hypothyroidism experience crippling fatigue and brain fog, which prompts reaching for non-nutritional forms of energy like sugar and caffeine. I’ve dubbed these rascals the terrible twosome, as they can burn out your thyroid (and destabilize blood sugar).

1. Just say no to the dietary bungee cord. Greatly reduce or eliminate caffeine and sugar, including refined carbohydrates like flour, which the body treats like sugar. Make grain-based carbohydrates lesser of a focus, eating non-starchy vegetables to your heart’s content.

2. Up the protein. Protein transports thyroid hormone to all your tissues and enjoying it at each meal can help normalize thyroid function. Proteins include nuts and nut butters; quinoa; hormone- and antibiotic-free animal products (organic, grass-fed meats, eggs, and sustainably-farmed fish); and legumes.

Music allows you to eat more. According to a study by the journal Psychology and also Marketing, soft, classical tunes encourage you to take time over your dinner, so you consume more meal. So, switch off – silence will always make you more aware of what you’re setting up your mouth.

It’s Friday brunch time and you just can’t stop going back regarding seconds. But hang on! Stop to get a minute and suck on a supplementary strong mint. The flavour will certainly put you off that third plate of chicken korma/roast beef/sushi medley.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Neither are good options. As already mentioned, those foods really aren't good for cats and aren't necessary for those with compromised kidney function. See www.catinfo.org for more info, and for CRF info see below

God is endless and we have a promise to be endless. For if God is endless and we love God we are endless in God. Lasting for eternal is Paul Gospel and many who liken Paul’s Gospel are lasting for eternity as we see today, but, on the other hand John Gospel is living and lasting for eternity “eternal". A balance is always needed in lasting for eternity and living eternally which the new change is balance for all in all these speaks of God on earth coming not for sin but life.
