Kitten food (dry, moist, canned) - check with your veterinarian for what is best for your kitten

Food and water dishes

Litter

Litter box

Bed

Medications as needed, prescribed by a veterinarian

Toys

Collar with identification information, including your pet's name, your name, address and telephone number

Carrier

The list Ceana gave you is almost complete.

The only part I am missing is a scratch tool.

A sturdy and solid and medium sized scratch post / cat tree would be awesome.

Medium sized to ensure it will remain convenient and attractive for your kitten even if it is grown up.

Cats (and kitten) need to scratch to keep their claws in shape as we will need nail files and scissors for manicure.

And the kitten will scratch on any other surface (carpet, sofa, mattress,...) if it has no other option to scratch. Your local pet supply store will have a bunch of models on stock or check out this page.

If the kitten will be alone at home for several hours, I would recommend to adopt a second kitten. They will have each others company while their care humans are at work/school/university/...

Note beside:

Kittens are very active and curious. Will say they will jump and climb on anything they can reach. Therefore lock all breakable or value items in a cabinet or drawer where your cat will not have access to.

And if it will be your first cat at all I would recommend to get a book about cat behavior or kitten behavior. This will help you understanding why your cat behaves as it does. And knowing that will help you finding cat friendly solutions for any unwanted behavior your kitten may show up.

My personal favorites are:

Think like a cat and "Starting from scratch" and "Think like a cat" by Pam Johson-Bennett.

Since there are way more books on the market, I would suggest to check them out and to get the one which will help you the most.

Hello and THANK YOU for being a responsible cat owner and keeping her inside. I work at a cat shelter and DAILY it seems I hear another HORROR story about terrible things that happen to cats outside. Spay or neuter before they get into puberty, about 4 or 5 months for a cat. and keep inside. A small animal like a cat is no match for the dangers outdoors. Cat haters, cars, Dogs, wild animals, stray cats that carry diseases (most of which are fatal), fleas, ticks, poisoned chemically treated lawn and gardens, (the chemicals are deadly poison to cats, cat walks or brushes against it and then licks itself=death and disaster..even if u dont use them, neighbors might and you wont even know...or getting shut into garages or basements and no one finds them in time.. they starve.. YES you are making the right decision. cats dont love the outside, they get CONDITIONED to it when an owner (usually too lazy to change litter) insists cats have to go out. Cats are creatures of habit. THey are also very curious and will explore any new area.. the outside, paper bags, cardboard boxes, btw always check your oven dishwasher, washer and dryer b4 using them, cats crawl into them.. and keep ur toilet lid shut and the bathroom door closed.. Even a tiny kitten can jump surprisingly high. the water attracts them and they fall in toilets and can not get a foot hold to climb back out, it is too slippery and their legs are too short. Do not put a collar on, cats hate them and even the break aways can be strong and the cat can choke. Look on line for "safe kitten toys", there is a really great site right here on Yahoo Groups called "for the love of cats", nice people and very smart about cats with good advice or just might like to see photos of your kitten if you care to share.. Dont let kitty bite your fingers, hands or toes If she goes to Latch on , usually by "wrapping" her little paws (arms) around , she then will start to bite and go into play fight mode that gets serious. When its a little kitten some ppl think its cute, but its not so cute when the cat has teeth and claws 1/2 inch long and has learned humans are to bite and scratch . Then they write on here complaining. Give her lots of play time with you, chasing cat toys (put away any long dangling toys where she cant get them if ur not watching) as she could become wrapped in it and strangle.. A diet of exclusively dry food is thought to contribute to urinary problems in cats ( look at the posts on For the love of cats about diet) add a teaspoon of so of spring water at room temperature to meaty canned food mixed in to make a kind of gravy) they need liquid in their diets.. and have fresh clean water available all times, if u dont see them drink thats ok some cats just drink at night.. Good luck , I wish you and your new baby a long and happy life together .Thank you for being a responsible cat owner, God bless you. take care.

you may get one yet do no longer assume your cat to apply it. In my journey I definitely have got here upon that cat's will basically sleep the place ever. they frequently do choose to detect a comfortable heat floor however and that they're going to use the comparable spot repeatedly. So in case you get a mattress attempt to place it the place they're already snoozing. it incredibly is advisable to grant it a pair greater weeks with it incredibly is mom so it incredibly is a minimum of nine weeks outdated. have exciting with your pets :)

Kitten Checklist:-

Food

**It is always better to feed a 100% wet diet as compared to dry. The reason is pretty simple. Cats are not big water drinker and they need water for hydration. Dry food contains very little moisture and a diet of dry food will create many health problems down the road. Also, the believe that dry food helps clean teeth is a complete myth just like how some people believe that wet food causes diarrhea.

Most cats are lactose intolerant so giving them milk is not a good choice. Some might develop diarrhea and some will be fine. If you like, you can purchase cat milk instead as a treat but the kitten has to be over 6 weeks old to drink them.

Water

(filtered water would be the best, you can also invest in a water fountain if you like)

Grooming Tools

(short haired cats require less grooming than long haired. Invest in good quality nail clippers, brush, flea comb, wet wipes, and I like to use a chamois cloth to give my kitty's coat a high sheen and glow after grooming. The furminator is also a good tool to help with controlling excessive shedding. Kitten do not need to be bathed unless they get very dirty/messy)

Litter and Litterbox

(She will need at least one litterbox for your kitten. To begin with, choose a smaller one where the sides are lower so she is able to climb in and out easily. Remember, not all cats like a covered litterbox. It is only convenient for the owner.

There are many kinds of litter to choose from and I personally prefer clumping litter made from natural biodegradable ingredients like corn, wheat and pine)

http://www.swheatscoop.com/

To make sure that your kitten uses the litterbox regularly, you have to maintain a clean and sanitary litterbox condition. Be sure to scoop daily and replenish with fresh litter. You will need to empty the litterbox at least once a week or twice a month. Wash the litterbox thoroughly with a mild detergent and bleach. Be sure to rinse off all cleaning residue. Don't forget to also clean the scoop! With kittens, you will need to make sure you leave a little of the used litter behind to remind them what the litterbox is for.

Scratching Post and Play Structures

You try one of these 2 method to teach your kitten to use the scratching post.

Method One

Hold treats near the post to get your cat to come near the post. Slowly, make your cat come closer and closer to the post to get the treat. Then increase the height at which you are holding the treat so your cat must put his paws up the post to reach the treat. Gradually increase the height at which you hold the treat so that your cat eventually has to climb to the top in order to get the treat. This training session is a slow process to be worked on each day, making small progress each time you work on it.

Method Two

Using the kind of cat toys that are at the end of a string, dangle, drag, and swing one of your cat's toys. Do this on and around the post. Use the scratching post as the play area. Your cat will climb up and down and around his post to try to reach his toy. By doing this, his post will be a place of fun and good memories.

Carrier

(When you bring your kitten to visit the vet, you will need a carrier. It is important that you choose one that fits the kitten comfortably and she can stand and turn around easily. You can choose hard sided or soft sided carriers and they come is all shapes and design)

Collar and ID Tag

I hope your cat stays indoor. If she is outdoor, a collar and ID Tag is a must. I am not a huge fan of collar for indoor cat because of the possible risk of strangulation and getting stuck in structures. But it is up to you to make that decision. Choose a breakaway collar if you must.

Toys

(Kitten loves to play and make sure you always supervise her playtime. Favorites are jingle balls, mylar balls, feathered toys, dangling toys, lure toys, and I recommend you try Da Bird and Cat Dancer. They go absolutely crazy for them. Some toys you can make at home. Milk Jug Ring is a hit in all cat household, drinking straws, a rolled up ball of paper, newspaper tent, pillow tunnels)

Bed

(Just to remind you, you cannot place a kitten on a bed and expect her to sleep there quietly like a newborn baby. Kittens will choose wherever they want to snooze and the place changes all the time. Just make a simple comfortable bedding for her should she choose to sleep in a bed)

A note about plants at home. Please visit this website to make sure your plants are safe for kitty and non toxic.

Plus you need alot of patience =)
