I've found that I care more about what's in my cat's food than I care about what's in the food I eat lol. So I am switching him to the Herring and Salmon dry formula by EVO. Does anyone have any bad/good experiences with this food?? I know about introducing him slowly and I know that people will probably tell me that dry food is bad for cats. But I've made up my mind on the food I'm going to give him, I was just wondering what you all thought!

You might want to rethink feeding Evo or Innova...actually anything from Natura.

They were recently bought by Proctor and Gamble. I doubt they will be a holistic food for very much longer and the price is going to increase very soon as well.

I actually do have a testimonial on their website written several years ago about how it had helped my diabetic cat. But it was not that specific kind of Innova EVO. It was the original Evo. I think if was turkey & chicken. I started out feeding the dry and transitioned to the wet because I was also thinking about kidney & urinary tract issues, and the canned was lower carb.

A few months later, I noticed the high phosphorus level in EVO and got a bit concerned since that is hard on kidneys, so I stopped feeding it on a daily basis. and started alternating with a variety of other low carb canned foods - Merrick, Merrick Before Grain, Wellness, Natures Variety Instinct, etc.

Then when Proctor & Gamble bought Natura (which included Innova Evo), I bought up several cases of the old Evo but have not bought it on a regular basis since then. After the way they have changed for the worse other brands of pet food they bought out, I did not really trust them.

The last time I looked at it, it seemed like they had not radically changed the ingredients. But there is actually quite a bit they could do get lower quality cheaper ingredients from somewhere like China and not have to change anything on the label. Anyway the local independent pet supply store where I shop stopped carrying it.

What I would say about your choice: That is a lot of fish. not the best idea to feed a fish based food every day. and EVO products in general even the non fish are usually very high in phosphorus. The combination of those 2 things AND a dry diet all adds up to not being so good for your cat's kidneys & urinary tract. not that the cat would get kidney failure right away. . But on a long term basis it just doesn't seem like the best choice for the sole diet.

Of course I personally just would not feed an all dry diet at all to a species known to have a low thirst drive. There have been studies that showed cats on a dry diet get only half as much water as cats on wet food - including the water in the food and the water they drank

But if I were going to feed some dry I would consider one of the other grain free dry foods. Maybe Wellness Core? I actually do have a small bag of that and give my young kitties snacks of it. though they mostly eat raw and canned.

I wish you'd take a look at Dr Pierson's main article on her site if you haven't read that http://catinfo.org

I love EVO and use it regularly in my kitty's rotation. A few thoughts to consider. It's more crumbly than other foods. My resident cat vacuums up crumbs but some of my fosters will not. If your cat won't eat the crumbs you may end up wasting a fair amount of food. The herring & salmon formula is likely heavy on fish. Too much fish can be problematic for cats as it can for humans. Consider using the chicken & turkey flavor. And lastly they've been bought out by P&G as someone else mentioned. P&G has a history of buying out good food companies and turning them into garbage. For now that has not been a problem, but I do read ingredients and the guaranteed analysis every time a buy a new bag, just to make sure they haven't messed with the quality too much. Aside from that, great quality food, and one of the cheaper ones in my area for that quality. That's why it's one of my favorites.
