Question:
Cat litter box placement?

My fiance seems to think that the best place to put the cat litter box for our 8 week old kitten, is under the end table in the living room. I told him the best place is in the bathroom next to the toilet. Someone please help me to help him make an educated decision on where to put the box. My fiance said the bathroom is an unsanitary place because that is where we shower. I tried to tell him that the bathroom is also where we "go to the bathroom". Any suggestions? Comments? I will be showing my fiance these answers to help him make a good decision. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I know I would rather not see anybody's cat box while visiting their home. However, I have seen them in the bathroom and they do not bother me in there as long as they are cleaned and do not smell. I would chose the bathroom for several reasons. If it does smell, you could close the door a little. A lot of cats prefer privacy when they need to handle their business and a bathroom would provide that. Also, litter boxes do cause a mess. The litter will be in the cats paws and transfer onto the floor. If the litter box is placed in the living room, this may be harder to clean if the living room is carpet. Also, you must consider company. Do people really want to see your cat pooping under the table while you are all having a family get together? Probably not. And because cats like routine, it wouldn't be smart to always move it to the bathroom when company comes over either. My cat refuses to use her litter box when I move it to another space. (Mine is in the laundry room because our bathroom does not have enough space.)

If I had room in my bathroom that is where mine would be. If you get a box with a hood that will keep things more contained.

The only place I have to put the box is in a closet off the living room and I really wish I could put it in the bathroom. It is a nuisance when the cat goes and you have people over and you have to apologize for the smell. In a bathroom, it is more acceptable for it to be a little stinky at times.

Cats also like their privacy so definitely get a hooded box if it is going to be in the living room.

The bathroom is by far the better place. It is not any more unsanitary for your cat than the living room. It also keeps the smell away from where you spend your time relaxing. In addition, it will be more dusty and the cats will spread litter everywhere and it is much easier to contain and clean the mess there. Lastly, if you have unecpected guests you won't have to worry about the mess.

As said, the last thing you want to see in your living room is a cat litter box, especially if you have guests in.

I have 2 female indoor cats and they have a litter box each, 1 is in a corner of my kitchen on linoleum flooring and the other is in my bathroom in the tub, I have found through experience that these are the best places for them as it is the easiest place in my home to clean up any accidents that happen, I do this because 1 of my cats will squat and pee in protest right next to her box if she is told off for anything, it's a work in progress to get her to stop doing this as she's a right cheeky wee minx lol. So, in my cases these are the best place to put them.

Good luck.

Cats (and kittens) can get really fussy about the location of the litter box. The best location is out of a traffic area, so the kitten has some privacy.

I have multiple cats, and multiple litter boxes. One is in a powder room, and the rest are out of traffic areas.

One drawback about it being in the bathroom. Litter gets tracked, and do you want to deal with that in the bathroom?

well you should have one more box than cats, so really you can do both places :D

we have ours in the basement, my boyfriend has his in the bathroom (he has 1 box, 3 cats and the actually just use the whole apartment).

use a litter catching mat and there should be no problem with it being in the bathroom.

lol I like that the other answerer "doesn't mind" the litter being in the bathroom "as long as it doesn't smell"

haha my cat lives here, not you! his litter will be where ever works best for him and me, not my guests. and I'm pretty sure your poop doesn't smell so good, so try to forgive my cat's litterbox for not smelling like roses.

The last thing I want to see when I'm relaxing in my living room is my cat doing his business. Besides the cat wants privacy for this too. The bathroom is the better place as long as you remember to leave the door open.

My personal opinion is in the bathroom. I don't think I would like to see it in my living room, ick. I read many places that you don't want to place it in the laundry room, common place people think is best to put it, but because of the noise kitty's avoid it and then you have potty training problems.

Hope this helps your situation! Good luck!! Best of all enjoy the kitty!

I vote for the bathroom who wants to watch t v and have your cat crapping in there move it to the bathroom and you can scoop the poop and flush it down the toilet while you in there .
