Question:
Hunting Mice, What Sex is better, Male of female kitten?
2008-07-24 00:12:04 UTC
We're getting to kittens, (either 2 males or 2 females) The main reason is to sort out the mice, however we've always wanted a cat so, its not as though its just to fix the mice problem, we are going to love them and love them until the day they pass away

We're wondering, what sex is better at hunting Mice? generally

Kittens tend to inherit their hunting tendencies from their mother, and provided that they stay with her long enough, she helps them hone these skills by bringing live prey for them to practice on. The mother has more of an influence on their hunting abilities, than their gender, so it's worth enquiring about the mother cat's hunting abilities.

Would you consider adopting older cats with a proven history as good mousers? In the UK, many animal charities seek good homes for working cats.

Well i have 2 cats, a male and a female and usually the female is better. She brings in at least one a day whilst the male cat brings one or two a week. I would get a female because they usually do get more mice

It depends on the cat's personality as to whether it hunts or not. My female cat, Bobbie, has always been a prolific hunter of anything that moves (she once brought in an adult magpie on the second week of being let outside after all her injections). She's brought us a squirrel and 2 moles too. SHe mainly brings in mice though. SHe manages to get all these animals despite all her collars having had bells fitted. The male cat, Tim, we used to have never brought an animal in in his entire life. He brought us leaves:-) How cute is that? lol.

My nan's male cat, Thomas, on the other hand brings mice and voles nearly every day. You'll just have to see how it goes. The cat I mentioned who brought just leaves is a rare example. All the other cats I've known have hunted mice and birds.

Female cats are better, males generally fight and laze about and spray. Females, like the female lions seem to do all the hunting. i live next to a field and from what our cat brings home each day, she must be the world champion in mice hunting. I step over bodies every morning and leave them for my missus to pick up (its her cat).

Won't matter, some cats don't even care about mice at all. I have heard of many owners who have had mice problems and their cats just sleep through and don't care at all. There's no garauntee the cat will do anything to help. No only that but a cat is a very cruel way to go about solving the problem (not to mention it wouldnt solve it even if the cat caught a few..you need them exterminated or caged). Cats play with their food. They torment them while they live. It's no way to treat an animal even if you find it a nuissance.

I really do not feel your answer is a cat. Plus, do you really want your pet to have possibly diseased creatures in its mouth? yum, won't that be nice when they lick your face for affection (at least my sisters cat loves to lick! ) your cat would get diseases and grossness in it's body....really now..please solve your mouse problem another way.

hi, i live in the country side, i have 3 cats, 2 boys and 1 girl. the boys r usless, we had a mouse in our house the other day, it ran straight into the boys and they just looked at it, the girl came over and took it away. to be honest, the boys are rather stupid, the girl is a great mouse catcher, we havent had any mice problems since getting her.

Get a barn kitten. Even if they haven't hunted before their moms have and they'll teach them.

Females, hands down. I've hardly ever had a male cat bringing me something it caught but I've seen females catch rodents like I pick apples.

Females are the better hunters. They have always had to provide for their offspring so it is their natural instinct to hunt for food (mice).

And yes, please make sure your kittens are vaccinated to make sure they don't contract any diseases from being outside and having contact with other wildlife.

If you get two females you can consider the names Thelma and Louise.

Good Luck with your search.

Females are much better hunters than males in general. The downside of this is they will probably be more interested in hunting birds if you let them outside !

i don't think it matters what sex they are i think it is how they are brought up. if you buy them from a farm where the mother and father are out hunting mice then i think the kittens would then start hunting for them

Throughout the cat kingdom, the females do the hunting so it may well apply to the domestic moggy.

One of my cats are female and i was so suprised to see that it had bought in a huge rat. My male cat is very lazy and can't be bothered to catch things.

Females definitely.

We had male and female cats and definitely the male was a lazy so and so. The female cat caught everything and he would try and take it off her and then she would drop it for him!!!!!

Get yourself a female - they are the hunters of the animal kingdom!

But please please, because it will be outside a lot, roaming around, make sure that its jabs and flea/worm treatments are up to date and that you have her spayed, or you could end up with more than a mouse problem!
