I am 13 years old, and my dad said I could get a pet cat if I'm responsible. c: So, I was just wondering, Should I get a boy cat, or a girl cat? I am a first time owner. I don't plan to use him/her for breeding, just as a friend to keep me company since I'm being bullied at school.

Search around at your local shelter... chances are they've already fixed the cat for you. I agree with the previous comment about 'you'll know'... As for the other comments about connecting better with the opposite sex or males being more affectionate... I have 1 male and 1 female. My male has a very similar personality to mine, and connects more with my husband. My female and my husband have similar personalities, and she connects more with me. Also, my little girl is more affectionate than my boy. It all depends on the personality of the cat, and on your personality.

Mila! I agree with Mila's comment. Sorry, had to go back and see who posted it.

I think males bond a little differently, if you get them as kittens, and so I have a slight preference for the male personality. Also, getting him neutered is much less expensive, and a much more minor surgery than having a female spayed. But males can have more dominance issues, and can be more high maintenance.

However, if you're going to adopt an adult from a shelter, I wouldn't worry about gender. I would just see who catches your eye and who you "click" with. Because this is your first cat, you might want to take one who is already well socialized. One who's very timid might leave you a little frustrated, because it can take a lot of time and patience before he bonds with you.

When you bring a shelter cat home, don't be too worried if he hides for a few days. He doesn't know you. He doesn't know where he is. He might need a day or two to get used to things before he settles in.

Since you're not planning to use the cat for breeding you can get either a male or female cat. To be honest, it's all about the chemistry or connection. You will know which cat you're going to take home once you see it.

I'm sorry that you're getting bullied at school. Make sure to let your parents or teachers know about it. Cheer up.

Whatever sex you choose, you must get it neutered. I would choose a girl because they have less health problems down the road, in my experience. At 5 years old, my male cat died of heart failure, which is common in male cats. Male cats also sometimes mark their territory around the house, even when they're neutered. I'm not saying male cats aren't a good choice, but for a first time pet owner, a girl would be best for you. I would go to the shelter and adopt one, as pet shop animals come from breeding mills, which are horrific :( Shelter pets also tend to be more loving. And it'd suit to rescue one from the shelter, as she will be rescuing you from bullying when you get home from school :)

Good luck, and enjoy your future kitty!! :)

Boy cats are easier to take care of and friendlier, because girl cats are very aggressive. I had a girl cat that scratched and bit a lot, so that wasn't fun. Sorry you're getting bullied D: Make sure someone knows about it and can help!

If you want a lot of cats get the girl

if you don't like breeding them you get the boy

Both male and female cats are very cool. When you go to the shelter, pick the cat that comes right to you. This means Kitty is friendly and wants to be with you. That's how Tika, my tortie friend,'adopted' me!

it depends on if you want to have the cat to play with or just to cuddle and pet. My boy cats have more energy and are more playful, my girl cats like to just lay down with me. Get a boy to play with, get a girl to love on.

I'm sorry you're being bullied. :(

If you want a more affectionate cat, get one the opposite gender as you. No guarantees, but generally, you'll bond better.

Do remember to get him or her fixed.

boys are cool but so are girls, thats really up to you, you will have to get it fixed though or else REVENGE OF THE PREGO CAT! lol thats only from girls but boys will get all horny and stuff.

I personally like Boy cats cuz there are better names for them (my opinion)

its up to you

good luck

I've heard that female cats are not as cuddly as male cats. Other than that I don't think it matters as they will be neutered.

definitely get a girl cat and get her spayed at 6 months old.

i have a boy cat who's really mean and i've heard of a lot of people who also have boy cats who say the same thing.

wouldn't you rather have a little miniature puppy... there so much sweeter and loving and devoted. kittens are adorable but they all grow up to be cats.
