I have bought some plastic strips with spikes on top and I want to put them on my fences to ward off neighbours cats who have taken to chasing my chickens. Am I ok to do this?

If they are the plastic ones that are designed to keep pigeons off buildings then yes thats ok as they are breakable if a person climbs over. It's only if you stick things that can harm people that you need to ask the council.

But ring your local council up and ask them just to make sure. I would say its to stop pigeons rather than to stop cats. They probably won't stop the cats anyway.

Yes you can put spikes on your fence or wall to stop anything crossing it.

You can even put razor-wire on there providing your fence is more than 2 meters tall and you have put warning notices up.

" manufacturers of these products tell me there is no specific legislation that forbids their use, as long as the wire is installed with reasonable precautions. This means that a material such as razor wire should be clearly visible, and not positioned in such a way that it could act as a man-trap. It should therefore either be up high, on top of a fence, wall, or roof, or else protected by an outer fence.

In other words, it should not be possible for an unsuspecting, innocent party to come into contact with it accidentally. It should also be clearly signed with yellow warning triangles that say "Razor barb - Danger" or "Warning - Barbed wire". Proof of adequate signage should provide a good defence in the event of a civil action from an injured trespasser. "

Have a word with your neighbours about the cats...if they are typical cat owners and won't admit their cats are a problem..telll them you're gonna install the spikes first..then razor wire if that don't help.

I want to put up those plastic spikes too and not because of the cats sh**ing in my yard, but because there are so many burglaries in my neighbourhood. Last May someone tried to pry off my sliding glass door the one night we were away. My neighbour regrets not putting those up because the foxes jumped over her 6 foot fence and killed her chickens. The reasons why they put up spikes may have nothing do to with your cat. Pepper, Jeyes Fluid and planting Cat Repellent Plant (Canis canna something?) should keep your cat out of his yard. Besides, have you been cleaning up the poo your cat has been leaving behind? That is a biohazard and spreads disease. Your neighbour could turn around and sue you. If I were you, I'd let sleeping fence spikes lie. It's a polite solution to a problem that may have nothing to do with your cat.

If it's a business, then by UK law you must have a sign to warn possible criminals of the hazards. If it's for animals then no, it is not illegal. But you may choose to put up a warning sign up anyway, because if any idiot tries to climb over they can sue you if they get injured if you did not put up a clear warning sign. Silly I know.

It's not illegal but I don't think your neighbours are going to be too happy about it. Also it's very hard for a cat to kill an animal as big as a chicken, your chickens should be fine. It's foxes you need to worry about, and possibly dogs.

DO NOT lie to the council as one person suggests you do. Anyone that lies to the council just to get their own way is been selfish in my opinion, and it's wrong to lie to the authorities.

I can't see a problem with the plastic spikes on your own fence

Hi its not illegal but I dont think it will deter them as I have seen cats walk on walls where glass pieces cemented into the top but its worth a try.

It's not illegal to fit them. However, because these anti-climbing strips were originally invented as a deterrent to human intruders (burglars etc) you should check with your local council and police station. If you are allowed to install them, you'll most likely be required to display a warning notice just in case someone injures themselves and tries to sue you.
