how do i stop my cat from peeing outside his box?

I have a neutered male cat who is about 1 year old. He sometimes pees in his box and usually poops in his box. But he has a bad habit of peeing outside his box on a regular basis. He started by peeing on our bathroom rug and now pees on other carpeted areas too. Yesterday he pooped in my dogs water dish. I've had enough of this!! i need help! my boyfriend hates the smell of cat pee and wants to find a new home for him. but i love him and want to keep him. we clean the 2 litter boxes often. We also have a female cat who always uses the litter box.

any advice or suggestions on how to stop my cat from peeing outside his box??

Last year my beautiful Manx cat Theodore went out for the evening and never came back. I love cats and the house didn't feel the same without one, so I picked up Lola from a rescue centre. Is the cat box cleaned regularly? Is it big enough? is it easily accessable? does your cat have a UTI perhaps? or some other ailment? (what?? at the above answer?)
