Are there any household floor cleaners that have been know to poison a cat / or other animal?

I am seeking any VALID information that anyone can help me with. I had a cat that just passed. She was overall heathly and was about 12 years old (current vaccinations and an indoor cat). About a month ago she started to become lethargic and about two weeks ago just stopped eating. I was having to force feed her. The vets say old age, but I do not agree.. it seemed to quick for me. Now I maybe searching for an answer because i just do not agree with old age.. she went from a playful cat to a deceased cat in a month. I have been racking my brain and the only thing I can think of that I changed, was what I mopped my tile floors with. I used a 'popular' spray with the mop attached with removable cleaning pads. I am sick over her passing but I can not help but wonder if this product has been linked to any other pet deaths. Or am I just looking to blame myself. Serious answers only ALL others WILL be REPORTED

I think it is very possible. So many cleaning products have caused health problems in people and pets. That's why I switched to a company with proven safer products for the enviroment and myself. You shouldn't blame yourself though, it happens. Pets pass away, it is possible it was just an illness that took your cat quickly. I wouldn't dwell on it, I'm sure you did all you could. To be on the safe side if you intend on having pets again switch at least back to your old stuff or find something that is proven safer and less toxic. Sorry for your loss.

It could very well be old age, but it is very odd how quickly she just stopped being herself. Was she an indoor cat?



Pinesol can be lethal to animals, as well as MANY cleaning products. Unless it says on the bottle that it is okay around animals (like some ant killers do), then it is more than likely lethal to animals.



Check the back of the product that you used, there should be a information number that you can call and ask questions about the substance. All cleaning products, unless noted otherwise, are poisonous. You can also call poison control and ask them what some symptoms are if the products was injested.

Anything you put on the floor would only kill an animal if they were on the floor while it was sopping wet and licked every inch of it up. Ammonia wouldn't kill it either unless it actually drank it. It sounds like your cat just died of old age! 12 years is a long time for a cat to live. Sorry it happened...but I do not think it was from any cleaner you used! Once cats get sick or whatever, they die very quickly....they usually won't just become less active and stop eating for a long time like humans can do. THeir bodies give up much quicker. So old age sounds about right.

I don't know any products in particular but cats CAN absorb toxins through their skins so you do have to be careful with household products. I know this from a cat we had ...we lived in the country and it got trapped in a barn that contained chemical fertilisers and tractor oil. It took quite a lot to harm him and he pulled through. Most cleaning products contain the same formulas. I think posting the question will help...if not try and find an online vet or contact the RSPCA (are you in the UK? ) or your local animal charity/welfare...they may be privy to some information....you can also contact other vets and pose the question.

I'm really sorry about what happened...I hope you find an answer but you may have to consider in this case your vet may have been right.

I would follow through on Casey's suggestions. As I just euthanized a 22 and 1/2 year old cat I of course feel that your cat's sudden death calls for some expanation and she shouldn't have had to die so young.



I do empathize with your loss. If you find any information you can share with us here about poisonous cleaning products I hope that you will in the hopes of saving other cats from that unfortunate end.

properly sounds like your cat is amazingly pleasant because maximum cats like rodents . Sorry about your guinea pigs . I used to have a hamster yet he exceeded on too then I were given yet another one and also you recognize he were given older and exceeded on too . Its unhappy despite the indisputable fact that it change into its time . I truly have 2 guinea pigs immediately and a large purchase of different pets . ok properly in the journey that your searching for something else then a guinea pig I advise a hamster because your top a ferret might want to be able to roam round in a house similar with a rabbit . A hamster sounds like an fairly small guinea pig to me and they are very lovable . they're extremely smart and playful similar with any rodent . So I advise a hamster and in case you are able to preserve a guinea pig then you fairly might want to be able to preserve a hamster . despite the indisputable fact that it really is as a lot as you . sturdy success !

that's very disturbing... i have recently switched to a Swiffter mop, but i have not noticed any diminishment in my 2 cats... But then, I do not mop regularly and when I do, the 2 cats are usually in my room sleeping away the day. But I will be careful about mopping now... geee....

I know that ammonia will kill anything walking in your house. Especially mice. Sorry for the passing of your cat.

almost all cleaners are toxic if the animal ingests alot atiny little drop aint gonna hurt them to much nethier will bertheing it in if it's dulotted it wont be as bad but if it's not it can and most likely will kill them

swiffer has poisions in it that can kill animals...there are definate studies to prove this
